The Executive Director is monca’s chief staff leader and is responsible for fundraising, organizational leadership, community engagement, and day-to-day administration. This is a hands-on position: the successful candidate will set direction while also following through on the practical work required in a small nonprofit. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board while maintaining clear responsibility for staff leadership and routine operations.

Position: Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week
Compensation: $70,000–$80,000 in annual base compensation, or $33.65–$38.46 per hour under an hourly structure, depending on experience and final position structure
Reports to: Board of Directors

Application deadline: Open until filled; priority consideration by September 19, 2026. Position open until filled.

Primary responsibilities

  • Lead contributed-revenue efforts, including individual giving, grants, sponsorships, donor cultivation, timely charitable-contribution acknowledgment letters, donor-wall updates, and other year-round donor recognition and stewardship.
  • Develop a practical annual fundraising plan with measurable goals, timelines, and shared responsibilities for the ED and Board.
  • Supervise, support, and coordinate staff; establish priorities, clarify roles, and foster a respectful, accountable workplace.

  • Oversee museum-store operations, including purchasing, inventory, merchandising, organization, and related systems.
  • Coordinate building maintenance and repairs with Butte County and outside service providers, including HVAC, plumbing, and other facility needs.
  • Recruit, orient, train, support, and coordinate museum volunteers.
  • Serve as liaison between the Exhibition and Collections Committees, museum staff, and the Board. The Exhibition Committee leads artist selection and curatorial planning; the ED coordinates schedules, budgets, contracts, staffing, promotion, installation, visitor experience, and communication with the Board.
  • Work with the Treasurer and bookkeeper to prepare the annual budget, monitor results, manage cash needs, and provide clear financial information to the Board.
  • Serve as a visible and constructive representative of monca with artists, donors, members, volunteers, public agencies, community organizations, and the media.
  • Support the Board with timely reports, well-framed decisions, and reliable follow through, while maintaining appropriate separation between governance and operations.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and complete both strategic and administrative work in a small organization.
  • Sound financial understanding, including budgeting and interpreting financial reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong practical digital skills, including the ability to collaborate with off-site board members, volunteers, contractors, and other team members through shared documents, cloud drives, calendars, video meetings, and related online tools.
  • Ability to learn and use point-of-sale, donor-management, and other operating systems. Experience with Shopify, Bloomerang, and comparable platforms is especially welcome.
  • Commitment to Northern California art and to welcoming, community-focused cultural institutions. A background
as a practicing artist or curator is welcome but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Museum experience is welcome but not required.

Position structure and benefits

monca expects this to be a full-time, primarily on-site position in Chico, averaging approximately 40 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities and reasonable flexibility in scheduling. Because strong candidates may have limited outside professional commitments, monca will determine the most appropriate structure
with the selected candidate. The position may be offered as hourly/nonexempt or salaried. Any exempt classification and salary will comply with California law. All monca work must be accurately accounted for under the final arrangement.

monca is evaluating health-benefit options. Depending on eligibility, participation requirements, and the plan adopted by monca, the successful candidate may be offered access to group health coverage or another lawful health-benefit arrangement with a modest employer contribution. The exact compensation and benefit terms will be stated clearly before an offer is accepted. Benefits are not convertible to cash unless expressly permitted by the applicable plan and law.
Reasonable, disclosed outside professional activity may be permitted when it does not conflict with monca’s interests, interfere with the agreed schedule or performance expectations, or prevent the ED from serving as monca’s primary staff leader.
