This year from Thursday, October 30th to Sunday, November 2nd, monca is hosting a Día de los Muertos ofrenda (altar) for the community to contribute to as we honor and remember those who are no longer with us.
The Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. In Mexican tradition, family and friends come together for spiritually significant festivities, often eating foods like pan de muerto, cleaning and visiting the gravesites of loved ones, and connecting with the departed via prayer and storytelling at ofrendas in the home.
The monca ofrenda will be located in the foyer, and available to add to and visit during monca open hours, Thurs-Sun 11AM-5PM. Typically, ofrendas display the departed’s favorite food, beverages, marigolds, trinkets, religious iconography, and more.
Please do not bring any food, beverages, or living flowers into the museum as the items may negatively impact the artwork on view. We encourage participants to craft replicas or create artistic depictions of their loved ones’ favorite foods or drinks as well as provide fake flowers.
All items added to the monca ofrenda will be available for pick up from Thursday, November 6th through Sunday, November 9th. monca is not responsible for any damaged or lost personal items. Please be aware that the altar is on view for the public. Museum staff have the right to remove any harmful or offensive items from the altar, all of which will be available to retrieve on the pick up dates.
We appreciate your participation in this meaningful tribute to the departed and request you take a moment with the ofrenda to meditate on those who you may have lost as well as those who make your current life special.
