Art Benefits Physical Health

The local arts community not only provides opportunities for self-expression but also contributes positively to regional health. Carving out time for art appreciation and creation can mean improving your mental and physical health too.

The Facts

The World Health Organization has found that people who engage with the arts are “more likely to lead healthier lives, including eating healthily and staying physically active, irrespective of their socioeconomic status and social capital.” Think of the arts as a therapeutic practice!

In a 2016 paper in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, a group of researchers measured cortisol levels of 39 healthy adults. They found that 45 minutes of creating art in a studio setting with an art therapist significantly lowered cortisol levels. Cortisol helps the human body process glucose, fats, and protein. Stress regulation, inflammation prevention, and maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm are all ties to cortisol levels according to the Cleveland Clinic. Those with higher cortisol levels often  experience a harder time falling asleep, heightened stress, and may deal with high blood pressure. It is magnificent that in just under an hour of art-making, you can improve your overall physical health and create something beautiful. Seems like a win-win!

Events like Tai Chi classes hosted by local Grandmaster Azad uplift folks of all ages by providing gentle and affirming movement practices to stay strong mentally and physically. Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art focused on sustained movements paired with meditative breathing which promotes balance, energy levels, and circulation. As Grandmaster Azad himself says, "As martial artists, we are brothers and sisters, united by our commitment to make the world a better place."

Other experiences like Guided Tea Meditation hosted by local tea specialist, Brittany Blau of Lagom Infusions, combines the art of tea blending and mindfulness meditation. The experience encourages folks to live in the present moment, focus on one's senses, and provides a peaceful space to meditate amidst the chaos of everyday life. Many tea blends support physical health by increasing immunity to illness, improving mental focus, and supporting a relaxed mindset.

The Museum of Northern California Art is proud to host events boosting physical health like World Dance, Tea Blending Workshops, Foot Foundations Classes, and more!
