monca is proud to host an exclusive lecture led by local educator and artist, Valerie Rose on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 6:30-8PM.

Valerie Rose is the founder and instructor of Sign Club, which hosts community ASL classes. Rose is also the artist and project coordinator for Sign Sign Project, a public arts campaign to raise awareness about ASL education and Deaf culture. Their murals reflect their commitment to Disability Rights while beautifying the Chico community, as evidenced in the murals "Bloom" & "Sign Language is as Necessary as it is Beautiful" located behind North Rim Adventure Sports & on the side of Show Love Thrift Store, respectively. They received a Masters in Sign Language Education at Gallaudet University and have been an ASL Instructor at Chico State University for 2 years. Valerie Rose is hard of hearing and was born to a Deaf family. Her first language is ASL.

Valerie Rose will present an engaging lecture highlighting the power and value of art made by Deaf and DeafDisabled artists. The lecture explores how art can further one's understanding of deaf knowledge and values as well as deaf ways of being/experiencing.

Doors open at 6:30PM, lecture starts at 7PM and will be followed by a Q&A session.

$10 General Admission

Two ASL interpreters will be available and video will include captions.

Tickets are available online here and at the door. All proceeds go toward monca's operational budget so we can keep hosting incredible events like this lecture! Thank you Valerie Rose for coordinating a unique and accessible event.
