Dream State
Maria Alquilar Exhibition
February 4 - March 28, 2021
“After receiving the generous acquisition of the Maria Alquilar artworks, the idea of Dream State evolved from observing Alquilar's very mystical and dream-like detailed images. Dreams are very personal and often times vague so to capture them in an artist's painting, photograph, video, sculpture or even music is a peek into someone's deepest thoughts. Alquilar was able to almost "shout out" her ideas by using very bright colors and with the addition of mixed media in her work. The northern California artists who are participating in this exhibition have taken chances to interpret their dreams in their own personal way. Maybe it is through music, photography or painting that dreams are expressed but it is up to the art viewer to do the interpretation.
Maria Alquilar Acquisition. This exhibition debuts the works donated to monca from Maria’s Surreal Vision Series but also includes a few paintings from her “Decadence: Resident Evil" series and a large new “Story Portrait” piece called “Someday Soon.” Alquilar’s artwork teems with colorful characters, iconography and stories. Richly detailed scenes of extraordinary visions merge with pancultural elements from myths, legends, mysticism, religion and history to express, in the artist’s words, “our perception of the eternal mysteries that may lead us to salvation and enlightenment.”Consistent throughout in form and content, each artwork in Alquilar’s oeuvre is part of a whole: an American woman’s book of illuminated fables for the turn of the millennium and the beginning of our global era. ~Elaine O’Brien Ph.D.
