About the 7 Picos Piñata:
The traditional star-shaped piñata is known as the 7 Picos Piñata. Commonly made and used throughout Mexico and Central American countries for celebrations, its seven points symbolize the seven deadly sins: envy, sloth, gluttony, greed, lust, anger, and pride. Traditionally, these bright and beautiful piñatas were designed to tempt individuals, serving as a reminder of the moral challenges we face. (But if you’d rather think about all the candy you’ll be stuffing into your piñata, that’s fine, too. We aren’t here to judge.)
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll not only learn the craft of creating these vibrant piñatas but also delve into the history and symbolism behind them. It’s a perfect blend of creativity and cultural education.
This workshop coincides with our “Roots and Routes” exhibition, a celebration of Latino, Chicano, Mexican, Latinx, and Latin American art. After the workshop, take some time to explore the exhibition and immerse yourself in the diverse artistic expressions from these communities.
Eunice Alfaro Lopez is a proud Latina with Chilean, Mexican, and Guatemalan roots who loves sharing her heritage through art and piñatas.
