Call for Art – Roots and Routes: Latin American Perspectives

This exhibition acknowledges that each person’s journey is different and aims to celebrate contemporary expressions of Northern California artists from diverse backgrounds within the Latinx, Chicano, Mexican, and Latin American communities, understanding that these terms encompass a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

Description of Call:

The Museum of Northern California Art is seeking original artworks from all artists within the specified communities using any media, except AI.  The exhibit will be held at the Museum of Northern California Art (monca) 900 Esplanade in Chico.

Eligibility: 

Original works created by artists residing in Northern California, defined as San Jose and all points north, east, and west to the state border. Refunds will not be given to those that enter but do not live in this region. If you have eligibility questions please email [email protected].

All exhibited artworks must remain in the exhibition until July 7, 5 pm, the last day of exhibition. 

Jurying:

The museum’s exhibition committee, comprised of professional artists and art collectors, will make

the final selections for the exhibition. Artists whose work is not accepted will not receive refunds of

their entry fee.

Presentation:

Accepted work must be delivered ready to hang or display. Work to hang on the wall must be fitted

with framing wire. All work must be dry and clean. No sawtooth hangers. 3D work must fit on a

pedestal (which monca can provide) or artist may provide other means of display. Artist’s name, phone, and title of work MUST be on the back of each artwork.

Entry Fee:

$35 ($25 for monca members) for up to 3 entries ($10 for each additional entry). All fees are non-refundable. Payment (check, cash or credit card) must reach monca by April 5, at 5 pm

If you wish to submit more than 3 works, please fill out the form a second time for an additional fee of $10 for each piece.  Artists will be notified of the decision on or before April 19.

Sales:

If you wish to sell your exhibited work, please provide a retail price reflecting a 50% museum commission. Prices will not appear on museum signage but a price list will be available upon request at the reception desk.

Calendar/Timeline:

  • Deadline for entries and payment:  Friday April 5, 5 pm
  • Jury results notification: On or before Friday, April 19, by email (to prevent email from ending up in your spam folder add [email protected] to your contacts).
  • Delivery of artwork:  May 2-5 and May 9-12 during museum hours 11am-5 pm
  • Opening date: Thursday, May 16, 2024
  • Reception: Friday, May 17, 6-8 pm; a free community event
  • Artist Talk: TBD, follow us on social media for details regarding all our upcoming events
  • Street Party: TBD
  • Pinata workshop: TBD
  • Closing date:  Sunday, July 7, 2024
  • Artwork pickup: July 7 at 5pm, or during museum hours (11-5 pm) July 11-14 and July 18-21. 

Works left beyond July 21, 2024 will be assessed a storage fee of $5 per piece, per day (Thurs-Sun).  Works left beyond August 22, 2024 will become property of monca

Please note

Postage/packaging/shipping insurance are the responsibility of the artist and will be required upfront.  If the work is to be shipped back, the artist must provide a pre-paid mailing label. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist. monca will be diligent in the care of artwork but is not responsible for loss or damage that might occur.  

The museum will not be held responsible for anything damaged in shipment.
